This version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the most distinctive from its MIRAGE comic origins. It thrived more on humor instead of a dark attitude, especially in earlier seasons. Its creativity and bizarre humor made it something in the late '80s and early '90s something that had never been done before, so it drew in fans and grew to syndication on USA's Cartoon Express and new episodes would be aired weekends on CBS in late 1990.
Four turtles fall into the sewers and are befriended by Hamato Yoshi, a Japanese man who fled from New York and had nowhere to live but in the sewers. He was framed by his enemy, Oroku Saki, in a plot to kill the sensei. One day he sees a strange green glow which transforms the four turtles into human-like creatures. Hamato (now Master Splinter) changes into a giant rat from the green glow and teaches the turtles the skills of the ninja as they team up with Channel 6 news reporter April O'Neil to battle against Yoshi's archenemy Shredder and Krang, an alien warlord from Dimension X. There would be other enemies as well. Season 3 gave new opportunities outside the Shredder storyline, such as Don Turtelli, the Rat King, and Leatherhead. Especially in later CBS episodes, where there were many episodes without the Turtles battling Shredder, enemies such as Pinky McFingers and other minor recurring villains would fight the Turtles as well.
After Season 7, the show took a dark turn towards the action storyline that made it more of a mainstream American adventure cartoon as Dregg and other characters were created and gave the Turtles quite a zealous collection of adventures before they finally faded out in 1996.
In the U.K, TMNT was broadcast under the name Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles due to fears that the "ninja" part of the logo was too extreme a word to use on British television at the time.

1987 - 1996 (2009)
194 Episodes
1 Turtle Tracks The baby turtles in Splinter's flashback have paws, not flippers. This is the only episode where Bebop and Rocksteady (names not yet revealed) are seen as humans during the full length of an episode. This episode was released on 2 VHSs titled "Heroes In A Halfshell," and "The Epic Begins." This episode is released onto DVD. This is the episode where the Turtles get their trench coast disguises. This is one rare event of Shredder removing his face mask. Vernon Fenwick and Burne Thompson makes their first appearance. This episode is based off Archie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventure Mini Series Issue #1. In this first season, Vernon is voiced by Pat Fraley, and is permanently voiced by Peter Renaday starting in season 2. The ninja chief at Ninja Pizza voice sounds like the cartoon character Droopy. The first season was never aired on terrestrial TV in the UK but was shown on The DJ Kat Show instead. In the true origins of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Splinter has always been a rat that mutated, but in this series, Splinter is a human named Hamato Yoshi before being mutated. In the origin story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, April O'Neil was Baxter Stockman's assistant and not a TV reporter, but in this series, April has no connection to Baxter at all. The two camera guys share the same voice as Leonardo and Raphael. This episodes alternate title is "Heroes In A Halfshell." 2 Enter The Shredder The fate of the rhino and the warthog is unknown after Shredder was done with them in an experiment to mutate Bebop and Rocksteady. The Technodrome first appearance in this episode. The credits show April with the turtles in an underground tunnel at which that scene comes from this episode. This and some other future episodes show the turtles sleeping on bunk beds, but in the previous episode, they're in short sewer tunnels. This episode was released on the VHSs titled "Heroes In A Halfshell," and "The Epic Begins." This episode is released onto DVD. Krang makes his first appearance in this episode. Shredder's point-of-view of the Turtles' origin is revealed in this episode. Bebop and Rocksteady's mutation is revealed in this episode. This episode is based off Archie's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventure Mini Series Issue #2. Krang's character is based off the Utroms from Mirage's comic book series. 3 A Thing About Rats This episode was released on the VHS titled "Hot Rotting Teenagers," but was the second episode on the tape and not the first as it would of been if it was in order as in the episode guides. Of the entire season 1 VHS called "The Epic Begins," this is the only episode not to appear on that VHS release, except the first 60 seconds of the Turtles and April letting Splinter rest. This episode is one of a few released on the rare format laser disc. Baxter Stockman makes his first appearance in this episode. Available on DVD. 4 Hot Rotting Teenagers From Dimension X The rest of Bebop and Rocksteady's gang is mutated into sub creatures, but never used for fighting purposes. The first appearance of the Neutrinos. The first appearance of General Tragg. The only appearance of Ganitor, Tragg's rock soldier. The Turtle Van is built out of Baxter's van. Released on DVD, and laser disc. Released on VHS titled "Hot Rotting Teenagers." The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center is referred to as The Global Trade Center. As April drives a high-speed chase against Tragg in the Techno-rover, she drives the van on 2 wheels to dodge a rocket. This is a reference to a James Bond movie called "License To Kill," where James Bond tips his lorry onto 2 wheels to avoid a bazooka blast. 5 Shredder Is Splintered Released onto DVD and laser disc. The DVD version refers this episode title "Shredded and Splintered." Released to the VHS titled "Shredder Is Splintered," and "The Epic Begins." The turtlecom is introduced in this episode. Krang's android body is introduced in this episode. The Turtle Blimp is introduced in this episode. This is the first time the Technodrome's location changes. In this case, it goes from under the city to Dimension X. Shredder's quote "So Hamato Yoshi, we meet again" come from Darth Vader in Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope, when he and Obi Wan start their final light saber fight. Krang says the line "Now you wretched reptiles, you'll face the wrath of Krang" and Michelangelo says "Wasn't that the name of a movie. This is a reference to the movie Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Kahn. This is the first season final. 6 Return Of The Shredder When this episode aired in the UK, the name of Shredder's dojo gang was altered to "The Crooked Turtle Gang" because the word "ninja" was feared to bring out too much violence. And images of Michaelangelo's nunchuks was trimmed out. Released on DVD and laser disc. Irma makes her first appearance. Tiffany, Burne's girlfriend makes her first of two appearances. The Turtles are drawn differently than back in season 1. They are drawn smoother, with smaller noses, and like Saturday morning type animation. Baxter makes a reappearance, but as Shredder’s helper. Based off Archie's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventure Series Issues #1 and #2. Beginning in this episode Peter Renaday voices Vernon Fenwick. Starting in this episode Vernon's personality changes to being snotty, competitive, and turtle-hating, rather than his pleasant, calm personality back in season 1. 7 The Incredible Shrinking Turtles The part where Shredder shrinks a bunch of New York buildings comes from the Sega Genesis game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Hyperstone Heist. The VHS release of this episode is called "The Incredible Shrinking Turtles," and contains all four parts of the "Eye of Zarnoth" episodes. Released onto DVD. Given that the Krangezoids are clones of Kang, it is likely that the giant reptilian beast they evolve into are Krang's original form. The series now has a new opening and closing theme song, and introduction, which includes footage from the first Ninja Turtle movie. The entire format of the series has changed; now the sky is red with gray clouds, April wears a dark gray jacket, April drives a Dodge, the eye holes of the turtles' face masks are bigger, but their eyes aren't, Shredder and Krang with Bebop and Rocksteady establish a new secret location at the Hall Of Science of the old 1964 World's Fair. The Technodrome is colored like an angry orange color to make the Technodrome look more villainous. The eighth seasonal final. April doesn't appear in this episode. The final appearance of General Tragg. The title is a prodigy of the movie title "Star Trek." The Technodrome is destroyed by being dragged into a Sarlac Pit by a mutant monster which is similar in the movie "Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi." 179 The Unknown Ninja The first appearance of Carter. The first appearance of Lord Dregg. The first of Hi-Tech. The final appearance of the Turtle Blimp. Rob Paulsen voices Raphael for the last time. The ninth seasonal final. 187 The Return Of Dregg Hi-Tech makes his last appearance and is replaced with Mung. Mung's first appearance. Released onto DVD. The DVD release is one of four "never before seen" bonus episodes on the Season 1 DVD release. The reason this and three other episodes were considered "never before seen" is because parts of the United States didn't air these episodes. Chicago at least did. Raphael is voiced by a new voice actor for the remainder of the series. This was aired alongside the next four episodes in the U.K packaged as a "Feature-Length" movie around November 1999 on Fox Kids, the "Red Sky theme" was glossed over the title sequence by the U.K "Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles" theme. 188 The Beginning Of The End Released onto DVD. The DVD release is one of four "never before seen" bonus episodes on the Season 1 DVD release. The reason this and three other episodes were considered "never before seen" is because parts of the United States didn't air these episodes. Chicago at least did. The first mentioning of Dimension X since "Turtle Trek." April says the line, "Oh, those guys have more energy than that battery-powered rabbit. April is referring to the Energizer bunny, the mascot of Energizer batteries, who is said to "just keep going and going and going." 189 The Power Of Three The return of Shredder and Krang. The only appearance of the Globfather, and Professor Huxley. Jeffrey Scott's original outline for Mobster from Dimension X included a scene in which the turtles' adviser, Splinter, lectured them on calming their minds and guiding their thoughts. This scene was cut from the final script. You can read several versions of Mobster from Dimension X, including the "beats" and Jeffrey Scott's final draft in Jeffrey Scott's book, How to Write for Animation. Raphael claims "I'll keep the Jelly Green Giant busy" talking to the GlobFather. Jelly Green Giant refers to the food brand, Jolly Green Giant. The Globfather is a take on Marlon Brando's character, who was also a crime boss, from the 1972 movie The Godfather. 193 The Day The Earth Disappeared The final episode released onto DVD as part of a never before seen bonus episode on the season 1 DVD release. The plot of this episode of the Earth being pulled through a portal to Dimension X comes from an earlier episode "The Big Blow Out." The episode title is a prodigy from a movie called "The Day The Earth Stood Still." 194 Divide And Conquer The final appearance of Leonardo. The final appearance of Raphael. The final appearance of Donatello. The final appearance of Michelangelo. The final appearance of Splinter. The final appearance of April O'Neil. The final appearance of Mung. The final appearance of Lord Dregg. The final appearance of the Technodrome. The final appearance of Krang's android body. The tenth season final. The final episode of the entire series. Sadly. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles won't be back on the air until February 2003 as a new series.
Jocko, a pet monkey who has become a 30 foot tall gorilla, grabs onto April and starts to climb up a tall building with her in his grasps. The movie April is making a reference to that Jocko must have seen is King Kong, which is clearly what the whole episode as well as the situation April found herself in was spoofing.
