Ninja Turtles 25 Years Of History

original movie Synopsis

When Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter April O'Neil is attacked by thieves, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles engage in their first combat situation, striking the thieves down and saving April, whom they take to their sewer lair. Upon meeting Splinter, the Turtles' sensei, the secrets of their origins are revealed. While the Turtles come to befriend April and Raphael encounters the vigilante Casey Jones, the Foot Clan (a gang of thieves stemming from Japan under the leadership of "the Shredder"), closes on the Turtles' lair and captures Splinter. In an ambush on April's store, Raphael is put into a coma. Forced into retreat, the Turtles, along with April and Casey, leave for an estate belonging to April, where they spend some time healing and training. Upon returning to New York, the Turtles wage war on the Foot Clan. With the aid of Danny Pennington, the son of Charles (April's boss), they free Splinter and confront the Shredder (who is revealed to be Oroku Saki, the man who slew Hamato Yoshi, Splinter's former master) in a rooftop duel. In the end, the Shredder is thrown off the rooftop by Splinter and crushed in the back of a garbage truck by Casey Jones.

Trivia Facts

All three newswomen seen or mentioned in the film have the name of a month in spring: April, May, and June.

In the Foot Warehouse, the boxes in the foreground near the skate half-pipe read Mirage, which was one the comic book company that originally published Eastman and Laird's Ninja Turtles comic.

In the film, April is a reporter for Channel 3. In the cartoon, she was a reporter for Channel 6, and in the comics (in her first appearance), she worked for a scientist named Baxter Stockman, who was a recurring enemy of the Turtles'. She escaped from him when he tried to kill her for threatening to expose a criminal scheme he was plotting using his mass-produced "Mouser" robots.

This was the highest-grossing independent film of all time, having made over $133 million in domestic box office.

In the original trailer, there is a shot of the turtles rising up from what looks like a swamp. The shot was cut from the final release but is part of a longer scene that was later used near the end of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991).

When Raphael walks out of the movie theater, a poster of the film Critters (1986) can be seen in the background.

Judith Hoag declined to reprise her role as April in the film's sequels due to substantial edits of scenes involving her character.

Toward the end of the movie, one of the street punks says to the police chief "Check out East Warehouse on Lairdman Island." The creators of the Ninja Turtles were Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

All of the shirts that Danny wears in the film have a picture of The Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious on them.

David Forman, the performer inside the Leonardo costume, also made a cameo (as a ninja turtle) in Richard Curtis film Bernard and the Genie (1991) (TV).

In the comics and the cartoons, the turtles are around 3-4ft. tall. However, for obvious costuming reasons, the turtles are the same height as April, Casey, Shredder, and the Foot Clan (Between 5'6-6'0).

In the script and novelization, the young boy that Tatsu attacks was to die from the beating. The sounds of the boy breathing and others saying he would be all right were added at the last minute after the movie ratings board objected to the scene.

The live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie with the lowest money budget ever made.

Brian Tochi (The voice of Leonardo) and Robbie Rist (The voice of Michaelangelo) are the only actors who appeared in all three live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies.

David Forman, the performer inside the Leonardo costume, also plays a gang member in the warehouse when Casey Jones defeats Tatsu.

Josh Pais, who plays Raphael, also plays a passenger in the back of a taxicab who says, "What the heck was that?" right after Raphael hops on the cab's hood.

Leif Tilden, the performer inside the Donatello costume, also plays the Foot Messenger that meets April in the subway station. He says, "We've been looking for you, Miss O'Neill," then he slaps her.

Michelan Sisti, the performer inside the Michaelangelo costume, also plays the pizza delivery man who delivers the pizza to the Turtles' sewer.

Mistakes

As Leonardo leaves April's apartment, we see his sword bend against the wall, indicating that it is possibly made of rubber.  [View Clip]

When Donatello is skateboarding in the sewers to meet with Michelangelo while Michelangelo is waiting for the pizza, you can see, for a couple of frames, a human hand (which should be Donny's) move in and then out of the camera viewpoint while he is doing a spin.  [View Clip]

While in the ground floor of the junk shop during the battle with the Foot Clan, Leonardo is seen helping April uncover an escape route. Then Leonardo is seen fending off the Foot in the background. The following shot shows Leonardo back in the same place at April's side.  [View Clip]

While fleeing the Foot Clan in the junk shop, the same brief scene of Donatello turning and punching out one of the Foot is used twice.  [View Clip]

When Raphael wakes up in the bathtub, there is a moment when Donatello laughs at a joke. As he does so he tilts his head back and opens his mouth, revealing the face of the actor underneath the costume.  [View Clip]

As three of the turtles are playing a board game, you can see a mike cord coming out of the bottom of a turtle's shell and going down his left leg.  [View Clip]

During the final fight, a foot soldier is thrown into the staircase of a fire escape. He grabs his head in pain and we hear the clanging sound, but we see that his head never even got within a foot of the metal.  Plus, When Michelangelo yells as he's fighting on the street in the last scene, you can see the actor through the mouth opening.  [View Clip]

Several times throughout the movie, the turtles' weapon belts squeeze their breast/stomach-plates in, suggesting they might be made of a soft material, like foam.  [View Clip]

In April's apartment, after the turtles watch April's interview on TV in which she thanks Raphael for saving her, Donatello says that Raphael is turning red from embarrassment, but Raphael actually responds in Leonardo's voice.  Plus, when Raphael and Leo are arguing in April's apartment, there is a crew member with an orange baseball hat on trying to hide under the table.  [View Clip]

At the end of the movie, when Shredder is running towards Splinter with the staff, part of the sound stage is visible (on the full screen version). No video available for this because of a wide screen video DVD.

When Splinter throws Shredder over the edge of the building near the movie's end, his puppeteer is visible (full screen only).

During April's mugging, and the Turtles' intervention, you can see glass breaking when Raphael's sai is thrown at the light, but the light doesn't go out for another second or two.  In fact, the sai misses the lightbulb.  [View Clip]

Right after Raphael is dropped through the skylights, he comes crashing to the ground. His brothers run to his side. As they do this you can see Donatello touch Raphael's shell. When he does this you can see the shell move inward as if it is something soft like foam.  [View Clip]

In the beginning, when we see Danny opening a box with a box cutter at the Warehouse, he throws it on the table and it makes an incredible bounce, proving that it's obviously rubber.  [View Clip, better viewable in 4:3 Full Screen)

When Raphael gets attacked by the Foot soldiers on April's roof, one of them tosses both of his sai over the edge of the building. Yet later in the movie, he has the weapons back even though he never had a chance to find and recover them.  [View Clip]

Several times throughout the film, Donatello uses Raphael's voice instead of using his own, like when he is punched or kicked by a Foot Clan member.  [View Clip]

In the scene where Danny exits the sewer via the manhole cover, he slides it up and to the left. When the scene cuts to Casey Jones and then Casey Jones walking passed the manhole cover, it is noticeably down and to the left.  [View Clip]

The exact same sound effect (a metallic "rub") is used both when Shredder turns towards Danny after his speech, and when he lifts his spike to Splinter's neck to threaten him- yet they are two completely different actions.  [View Clip]

When Michelangelo tucks into his shell to avoid an attack on the street at the end of the movie, you can see two human hands lifting up the turtle’s arms at the bottom of the screen.  (Viewable in 4:3 Full Screen)

In the beginning, when the Turtles are shouting various phrases after their first battle, Donatello yells, off-screen, "Bossa nova!" but on-screen Leonardo's lips move.  [View Clip]

Towards the beginning of the movie when the young kids are bringing stolen goods to the foot soldiers in the large cargo van, the foot soldiers close the double doors at the back of the van and the sound of the doors latching is nowhere close to the time that the doors actually close.  [View Clip]

Look cafeully, as April surfaces out of the manhole outside of her antique shop, Donatello surfaces twice with Michelangelo in between the two surfaces.  [View Clip]

Alternate Versions

German version is based on the cut British version. In addition it is heavily dimmed and cartoon-like sound effects were added to the fight scenes.

When aired on the USA Network channel, the scene of Shredder in the back of a garbage truck was edited somewhat. Like in the original version when Casey pulls the lever, the back door closes and the smashing mechanism begins, next shows Shredder's helmet being flattened, in the USA version, now when Casey pulls the lever it shows a scene of the turtles and Splinter watching then a scene of the punks that Casey and Splinter met back at the hideout then cuts to Shredder's helmet being flattened.

There is an additional scene that was supposed to take place at the end of the movie in which April and Danny go into the offices at Mirage comics to pitch a story about teenage mutant ninja turtles. The publisher turns them away claiming the idea to be too "farfetched" the turtles pop their heads out of each window corner behind the publisher For some reason this bit made it into the book adaptation as well as the sticker book (with pictures), but was left out of the movie.

The depiction of chainsticks on screen was rarely allowed in the UK, so the movie was heavily cut or reframed to remove every last trace of them for its original theatrical exhibition. In 2003 all these cuts were waived by the BBFC due to changed guidelines.

In the original theatrical run, there was a scene with the turtles training on the farm. It had Leonardo taking on the rest of the turtles with his eyes covered. This was also in the book adaptation, but for some reason it was taken out of the home video release.

In the UK theatrical, television and VHS versions, the ban on chain-sticks caused two scene notable scene trims. The face-off in April's apartment in which Michaelangelo and a member of The Foot perform chain-stick moves in succession was removed completely, with the fight starting instead with Donatello diving through the air directly after this sequence. Another sequence trimmed heavily was the apparent death of Shredder. In the full length version, Shredder charges at Splinter, who produces a pair of chain-sticks, wraps them around Shredder's staff and hurls him over the edge of the building. Shredder hands onto his staff which Splinter maintains his grip on, and Splinter begins a speech, but is interrupted by Shredder, throwing a scythe at him. Splinter moves to one side, and Shredder looses his grip on the staff, falling into the garbage truck where he is crushed. This was heavily trimmed so that it appears Shredder runs at Splinter, who seemingly trips him up, and Shredder just falls over the edge as Splinter watches on. The original versions of both scenes were reinstated for the 2004 DVD.

secret of the ooze synopsis

After their rooftop battle with the Foot Clan, the Turtles find themselves between homes and are living off pizza delivery from "Roy's" Pizza while staying in April O'Neil's new apartment with Master Splinter. When April covers the cleanup process underway in the city by TGRI, Splinter recognizes the initials from the canister of mutagen that turned them all into mutants. Meanwhile, the Shredder is alive and well, has resumed command of the Foot, and seeks revenge upon Splinter and his students. Upon learning of the potential for the ooze to mutate animals into minions, he sets out to obtain samples and scientists, kidnapping Professor David Perry of TGRI and forcing him to assist in the creation of two aressive mutants to be his own pupils: Tokka (a snapping turtle) and Rahzar (a wolf).

When the Turtles are discovered in April's apartment by Keno, the pizza delivery boy, they reveal their history and Keno tells them about the reborn Foot Clan's efforts to recruit people with fighting ability. Seeing the potential to infiltrate the Foot, Keno offers to sign up but Splinter refuses to put him in danger and believes that they ought to get out of April's apartment instead. Not willing to simply let the Foot Clan regroup, Rafael abandons the others during their search to team up with Keno while his brothers stumble upon an abandoned Subway Station under the city.

Professor Perry manages to contaminate the mutagen to ensure that Tokka and Rahzar will not grow intelligent as a result of the mutation in addition to growing. Shredder is persuaded not to kill them by the professor due to their incredible strength (which is greater than anything exhibited by Splinter's pupils). Ironically, they imprint upon the Shredder as their mother.

After infiltrating the Foot, Raphael discovers that the Shredder is alive only to be caught and used as bait. Keno gets word to the others and they try to save him from the Foot's base in the junkyard. There they are caught in a well laid trap. Master Splinter saves them and they fight the Foot and Shredder's mutants in an effort to escape with Professor Perry. They make it back to the home in the old Subway where Perry reveals everything he knows to his new friends.

Donatello and Perry begin workin on an anti-mutagen when April sends word that the Shredder intends to let them loose on a rampage in Central Park if the Turtles fail to show at a fight to the death at a local construction sight. The Turtles, armed with anti-mutagen doughnuts, face Toka and Razar and the fight spreads to a local nightclub where they interupt a performance by Vanilla Ice and Ninja Rap is born. The doughnuts do the trick and the Turtles again confront the Shredder, who reveals his plans to create more mutants. When he exposes himself to the ooze, he mutates into Super Shredder and trys to bury them all but ends up killing himself instead.

Trivia Facts

During filming of the scene where the turtles are trapped in the net and fall to the ground, one of the stuntmen broke an ankle.

Dedicated to the memory of Jim Henson.

Ernie Reyes Jr. was Donatello's fight double in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990). Producers liked Reyes so much, they created the role of Keno just for him.

At the beginning of the film where April enters her apartment and picks up a pile of magazines, the top one is actually a comic book of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The building used for the entrance to April's apartment is the office to the New York location of Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

Originally, the studio wanted Bebop and Rocksteady, from the 1987 cartoon, to appear. However, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were not in favor of it, so Tokka and Rahzar were created.

The abandoned subway station, which serves as the Turtles' new lair, is based on the real life "City Hall" Station of the former Interborough Rapid Transit company in New York City. Although the station itself is decommissioned, the track on which it is located is still active.

The only live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie to not include the Casey Jones character.

Leif Tilden (The performer inside the Donatello costume), Michelan Sisti (The performer inside the Michaelangelo costume), Kevin Clash (Splinter), David McCharen (The voice of Shredder), Toshirô Obata (Tatsu), Michael McConnohie (The voice of Tatsu), and Raymond Serra (Chief Sterns) are the only cast to return from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990). Brian Tochi (The voice of Leonardo) and Robbie Rist (The voice of Michaelangelo) are the only actors who appeared in all three live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies.

Director Cameo: [Michael Pressman] as the Channel Three news manager.

Mark Caso, the performer inside the Leonardo costume, also plays the man in the news room who tells April that Donatello is calling her.

Leif Tilden, the performer inside the Donatello costume, also plays a Foot soldier.

Michelan Sisti, the performer inside the Michaelangelo costume, also plays the Soho Man who talks with April before she enters to her apartment.

Adam Carl replaced Corey Feldman as the voice of Donatello in this movie only.                                                                                                       ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mistakes

In the construction scene, part of Marc Caso's arm can be seen when Leonardo reaches for his katana blades and his costume opens up at the elbow.  [View Clip]

When Keno is running from The Foot's Soldiers in the junkyard aka. The Foot's HQ, you see him fighting against two of The Foots soldiers, and another guy running in the back, ready to do jump over the junk in front of him, and do a somersault. Before the somersault, he jumps up into the air, like he is about to jump onto a trampoline.  [View Clip]

During the fight in the TGRI lab with the Foot one solider falls and is knocked out and yet he was still able to trip Donatello as he's surfing on a computer chair.  [View Clip]

During the junkyard scene, just before Donatello is thrown, you can clearly see that Leonardo's katanas are in their sheaths. After he is thrown the shot cuts back to Leonardo fighting and his katanas are no longer there.  [View Clip]

After Donatello is thrown through the roof and rips the tape off of the TGRI guys mouth he exclaims "I gotta get the hang of that" to which the TGRI guy says "That's okay." immediately after "That's okay" you can hear someone on the set say "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 107" in the background. Turn the sound up on your speakers to hear this easily.  [View Clip]

In the first fight scene, Keno does a leg sweep on one of the bad guys, Keno clearly misses by 3 long feet, but he still falls to the floor.  [View Clip]

When Shredder tells Tatsu to remove the bar because "it's time they learned who their master is", the shot goes back to show Tatsu from the front, where his lips are clearly moving, but there is no sound.  [View Clip]

After Michelangelo gets caught not doing the back flips Splinter punishes him to do, he says "one? Yeah," but at the beginning of that part, he does at least 3 back flips and not the one he questions.  [View Clip]

Alternate Versions

German version had cartoon-like sound effects added to the soundtrack in the fight scenes.

In the theatrical release, the first fight scene when the turtles first come in was slightly longer. On further home video releases, for some strange reason, it was shortened.

The depiction of chainsticks on screen was rarely allowed in the UK back in the early 90's, so the movie was heavily cut or reframed to remove every last trace of them. However it has since be shown uncut on UK TV and was passed uncut by the BBFC for it's 2002 DVD release.

In the DVD release, the line, "Help, Leo!" spoken by Michaelangelo as he is being swung in circles by Rahzar is cut. It is present in the theatrical and VHS releases. This line does, however, appear on the subtitles.

teenage mutant ninja turtles iii synopsis

In Japan, the year 1603, a lone warrior on horseback races through the forest, being chased by four Samurai. The young man is captured by his pursuers and taken to the imposing Fortress of Lord Norinaga. Inside, Lord Norinaga confronts his captive, his son, Prince Kenshin. Norinaga quarrels with Kenshin, who is ashamed of his father's actions in what he considers to be an unjust war. Just as Norinaga is about to strike his son down for disgracing him, a gunshot is fired. An English trader, Walker, warns Norinaga that the rebels are about to attack. Guards take Kenshin away as Norinaga and his British allies prepare for battle. In present-day New York City, the Turtles are in their sewer abode, practicing their ninjitsu skills. April appears to present gifts to the Turtles as they have offered to watch her apartment while she goes on vacation. She brings an odd scepter along to give to Master Splinter which begins to glow magically. In a flash, April disappears, and in her place is an Asian man: Prince Kenshin. April finds herself back in time at Lord Norinaga's fortress. Everyone there, save for Walker, thinks that she is a witch, and April tries to use this to her advantage by frightening the ancient warriors. Walker, disbelieving that April has any supernatural powers, defies her to shrink him. When she fails to perform the sorcery, guards haul her away. Back in New York, Donatello and Splinter have determined that the scepter is a time-switch device, and for the Turtles to use it, people from the past will be brought to the present. The Turtles get their friend Casey Jones to guard the people from the past that will appear when they go back in time to find April. Donatello determines that the staff's powers will only work for 60 hours, and after that time, if the Turtles do not return, they will be stuck in the past. Don activates the Scepter, and in a blinding flash, the Turtles vanish. In their place are four disoriented Samurai, the four Honor Guards of Lord Norinaga. The Turtles pop back in time into the middle of the battle between Norinaga's forces and the rebels. They are on horseback and decked out in full Honor Guard Samurai regalia. Michaelangelo ends up backwards on his horse, and it gallops out of control into the forest! He is attacked and dismounted. The leader of the rebellion, Mitsu, is shocked to find a giant Turtle under the helmet, and she orders Mikey to be carted off to the rebel village. As night falls, the 3 remaining Turtles sneak into Norinaga's keep in attempt to rescue April. Walker is talking with Norinaga, who has just learned that his four Honor Guards have disappeared, along with the Sacred Scepter! Walker argues that Norinaga must buy his guns to quell the rebellion, while Norinaga fears that all is lost now that the scepter has vanished. The Turtles follow Walker's henchman, Niles, and he inadvertently leads the Turtles to April in Norinaga's dungeon. April finds an escape route, and she and the Turtles fight their way to escape. They are accompanied by a prisoner named Whit, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Casey Jones. It seems that he was jailed for mutiny, and he is as eager to leave this place as April and the Turtles are. Norinaga, when discovering April's escape, prepares to punish Niles. Walker is able to prevent his henchmen from being toasted, however. The Turtles are now in the forest, basking in its ancient beauty. Suddenly, rebel forces ambush them, thinking that they are Norinaga's Honor Guard. Donatello removes his helmet, and the rebels are shocked to see more giant Turtles. The Turtles are taken to meet Mitsu, who exclaims that they are like "the other one." The Turtles realize that Mikey is with the rebels and rejoice in the knowledge that they'll soon be reunited. As they head back to the rebel village, they see smoke rising from it. Walker and his men are burning the town, looking for the scepter and Prince Kenshin. As the Turtles and the rebel warriors rush to save the town, we see a young boy trapped in a burning home. Mikey rescues the child and Leo saves his life by performing CPR. Mitsu now knows that the Turtles are good, and welcomes them. The Turtles remember that they need the scepter to get back home, and they are running out of time. They go in search for it, as Whit and April help the townspeople rebuild their homes. When the Turtles cannot find the scepter, Donatello comes up with the unlikely scheme of creating a new one. When Donatello's scepter is finished, Leonardo accidentally drops and breaks it. Just then, Mitsu walks in and announces that Norinaga will attack in the morning. The Turtles decide to join Mitsu and her people to fight the overlord. That night, Michaelangelo and Yoshi hang out. Raphael gives Yoshi a yo-yo, and the boy wanders off. When he returns, he brings the Sacred Scepter. As everyone argues about who hid the scepter, Whit holds a knife to Mitsu's throat and demands the scepter. Whit takes Mitsu to Norinaga, and tells the Daimyo that she has kidnapped his son Prince Kenshin. Mitsu then tells Lord Norinaga that Whit is holding the Sacred Scepter. Mitsu attacks Norinaga but is stopped by Walker, and she is taken to the dungeon. Whit tries to cut a deal with Walker, using the Sacred Scepter as a bargaining chip. The Turtles break into the castle once again to save Mitsu and the other rebel captives. As the heroes attempt their escape, they run headlong into Lord Norinaga and his men, and a battle ensues. Leonardo manages to beat Norinaga in a sword fight, and effectively captures him inside a giant bell. Things are going great for the Turtles when Walker takes April hostage at gun point. Walker tries to flee with the Sacred Scepter, but the Turtles catch up with him. Walker tosses the staff into the air, but the Turtles manage to catch it before it hits the ground and breaks. A fireball explodes then, knocking Walker off the top of the castle and into the moat waiting far below. Back in New York, Casey realizes that it is time to send the real Honor Guard back to the past, but they have lost themselves in a local nightclub. The Turtles have the Sacred Scepter at last and the rebels have defeated the evil overlord Norinaga. As the Turtles prepare to use the Scepter, Mikey, Raph and Leo decide that they would like to stay in the past, where they are welcome and happy. As they argue, the magic staff activates, and the Turtles make the decision to leave. Now back in the sewer, the four Honor Guard and Prince Kenshin have vanished, and in their place are April and the Turtles. Casey and Splinter welcome the Turtles and April home.

Trivia Facts

At one point in the movie, one of the turtles refer to Walker (Stuart Wilson) as the "Zorro dude". Wilson later starred in The Mask of Zorro (1998) as Don Rafael Montero.

Mark Caso (The performer inside the Leonardo costume), is the only cast to return from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991). Brian Tochi (The voice of Leonardo) and Robbie Rist (The voice of Michaelangelo) are the only actors who appeared in all three live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. Corey Feldman who appeared in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) makes his return as the voice of Donatello.

The only live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie to not include the Shredder character.

The only live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie that doesn't have the Jim Henson's Creature Shop involved with the creature costumes. This explains why the Turtles' and Splinter's appearances in this film are different from the previous two movies.

Mistakes

While being destroyed, April's Walkman keeps working (for a moment), even after the batteries have fallen out.  [View Clip]

When Walker falls into the sea, he disappears before he hits the water.  And yet, there was no splash, considering the sound effects.  [View Clip]

When the ninja turtles are running across the clay tile roof you can see that the tiles bounce like rubber as they run across them.  [View Clip]

When the turtles tell April they plan to rebuild the scepter, April has black trousers on but in every other scene her legs are bare.  But can only be best viewed in 4:3 fullscreen, but my DVD footage is always 16:9 widescreen.  [View Clip]

Alternate Versions

The depiction of chainsticks on screen is rarely allowed in the UK, so the movie was heavily cut or reframed to remove every last trace of them!

Channel 5 have been known to screen films with scenes that have been cut by BBFC; this is one of them, notably the opening credits, Michaelangelo uses his nunchakus several times.

tmnt (2007)

After the defeat of their old arch nemesis, The Shredder, the Turtles have grown apart as a family. Struggling to keep them together, their rat sensei, Master Splinter, becomes worried when strange things begin to brew in New York City. Tech-industrialist Max Winters is amassing an army of ancient monsters to apparently take over the world. And only one super-ninja fighting team can stop them -- those heroes in a half shell -- Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael! With the help of old allies April O'Neil and Casey Jones, the Turtles are in for the fight of their lives as they once again must face the mysterious Foot Clan, who have put their own ninja skills behind Winters' endeavors. Making this new incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles truly cutting-edge, the film will be created entirely with state-of-the-art CG animation, giving them a completely new look for the 21st century.

Trivia Facts

This was Mako's last film.

Oscar-nominated actor Mako was announced as the voice of Splinter at San Diego Comic Con the day before he died. Fortunately, he had finished the majority of his acting.

All the Generals' names are loosely translated from Spanish: Aguila (means "Eagle"), Gato (means "Cat"), Serpiente (means "Serpent") and Mono (means "Monkey").

The film was dedicated to the memory of Mako. Mako played Master Splinter in the film.

Towards the end of the film, several items are shown that reference the live action movies. These include: The Shredder's helmet and staff, a Foot Ninja Mask, the canister of ooze that mutated the turtles and Splinter (labeled TCRI instead of TGRI, though a crack is strategically placed to work either way), the Time Scepter, Walker's hat, Lord Norinaga's helmet, and pieces of the suits of armor worn by the Turtles in the third film.

During the first Nightwatcher scene, when the criminals are fleeing, one of the signs on the shops in the background spells out "monro" in hiragana, a Japanese writing system, which is most likely related to the writer and director Munroe.

Specific dialog makes references to the previous live-action films. In the battle with the Foot Clan, Casey Jones says, "Two minutes for high sticking!" which was one of his lines from his introduction in the same film. The very last line of the film, spoken by Raphael is, "Man, I love being a turtle!" which has been spoken in each of the previous films.

Despite the film taking place in New York City, only one real life New York landmark was shown, the Brooklyn Bridge. Most of the cityscape in the film is fictional.

Splinter's appearance is generally consistent with the previous movies (in which he is depicted as having brown fur), although in this movie, he wears a proper karate gi, as opposed to dirty rags from the previous movies. His right ear is also no longer cut as it was in previous movies. Kevin Munroe jokingly responded that Splinter had an otoplasty.

Jim Cummings is the only Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles actor to make it into this movie since his first TMNT appearance in the 1987 version of the classic TMNT cartoon series, which he played Leatherhead, Genghis Frog, and the 1991 alternate of Shredder.

One of the arcades at the Turtle's lair features the character Zeus from Imagi's animated TV series, "Zentrix" (2001).

During Raphael's finishing lines, the phrase "we strike hard and fade away into the night" was used. That was also the ending line in the first TMNT comic.

As revealed on the director's commentary on the DVD one of the early drafts of the script had Raphael briefly dying and Donatello using Winter's technology to bring him back to life. This idea was turned down by Peter Laird however who disliked the idea of having one of the turtles dying.

The film's lead track "Shell Shock" by Gym Class Heroes originated as a freestyle rap performed at a concert they performed at.

The largest money budget Ninja Turtle movie ever. The amount of it's budget surpasses the live action trilogy's amounts.

The first entirely animated Ninja Turtle movie.

Some of the 13 monsters are based on actual 'monsters' from popular myth - the first one that appears in the unfinished building is based on the Yeti, the next one to be captured is obviously the Cyclops, the one that eats a pigeon on a building is clearly modeled on gargoyles, and the one in the diner brings to mind the Jersey Devil.

Mistakes

When April puts her sword up after she cuts through some plants, the sword handle is next to her left shoulder. When the camera angle changes, the handle is next to her right shoulder.  [View Clip]

While April is going through the jungle in the beginning, she sticks her sword between her backpack and her back. However, the sword keeps disappearing and reappearing, and/or keeps changing sides.  [View Clip]

When Michelangelo enters the Turtle's lair, he throws his skateboard to the ground near the front entrance before descending down a stairway. When he goes to sit on the couch, his skateboard reappears laying on the floor by the platform but earlier shots has clearly shown it was not there before.  [View Clip]

In the scene where Michelangelo, Donatello and Leonardo go to April and Casey to get Raph, when Raph gets up there's no bandage on his arm. In the next shot, a closer shot just as he's sitting down, we can see that there's gauze wrapped around his arm.  [View Clip]

After Raphael argues with Donatello, and Splinter is introduced, Raphael's bandanna briefly turns grey as he leaves.  [View Clip]
